Thrifting in the Mountains! With Jake!

We went on a little vaca in the mountains two weeks ago. My husband was working so I was flying solo with my 15 year old, Jake, and his friend Patrick. The boys golfed every day so I had lots of time to read and relax, not a bad deal.

I did not even have thrifting on the brain but saw a sign that the local Lions Club were having a big garage sale on the Saturday morning. Jake asked if I thought they would have any golf clubs. He hadn't played since the summer before and we hadn't realized he had outgrown his junior set. We were in Fairmont Hot Springs, BC and the place is a mecca for golf (the resort we were at had three courses alone, plus countless others within a short drive). Seriously, if anywhere was to have golf clubs it was there.

So my son got up with me bright and early while Patrick slept and we hit the sale. Within minutes Jake worked out a deal with one of the volunteers for a set of clubs for $10. TEN DOLLARS!! For an entire set of clubs including a great bag with a stand. He was pretty pleased with himself. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree ;). Here's a shot from the iPhone.

And I managed to find something myself for $10. This glass and iron shelving unit. I knew this thing had promise.

But it didn't *quite* fit into my Honda Civic (especially with the third bag of golf clubs!). But I was determined to bring it home and for the entire 3 hour highway drive it stayed securely up top thanks to the 100 feet of rope I picked up at the hardware store and the Mexican blanket I always keep in my trunk, along with some strategic rope tying.

The boys thought I was NUTS. I suppose I am. But look at how this thing prettied up with a can of Krylon Fusion Hammered Finish spray paint.

It was absolutely worth the time it took to mount it to my roof and the stressful drive home worrying if it was staying secure. And the fact that the drivers behind me left lots and lots of room was A-OKAY too. Kidding. I tied that sucker so tight it didn't even BUDGE.

Thanks for visting! I'm linking up to Rhoda's Thrifty Treasures party and Linda's Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays.

Hockey Sign

Hi there!

No card to share but I thought I would post the sign I made for the big game tonight. My son's hockey team is in the city finals tonight! I hesitated making the sign as I thought it would be too juvenile (the kids are 13 and 14) but Jake says it's "sick," which anyone with teenagers knows is a compliment. I will confess I am a full blown hockey freak mom. I also do a lot of volunteering related to hockey hence the lack of crafting and blogging recently.

For the sign I used my Cricut and the Don Juan and Sports Mania cartridges, about $2 of cardstock and a 97 cent poster board. The banner on the top has each players name and number. I couldn't resist lacing up the skates. I will definitely use these images again for a hockey scrapbook page sometime in the future.

Oh, and I may have made the sign but I won't be raising it over my head at the game or anything. I'll give it to one of the little siblings on the team to do that! I'll be too busy cheering my face off.

Thanks for popping by.

Advent/ Countdown Calender

I haven't been blogging much lately, but I have been crafting. I am finding with the shorter days and lack of sunlight it's really difficult to get decent pictures lately, but I wanted to make sure I got this project posted. I made two of these earlier this week, one for my son (13) and one for my nephew (4). I had a lot of fun and would like to do more of these in the future. I have a 9 month old nephew who will eventually get one and a 42 year old husband who has also expressed interest :).

I used some Basic Grey pp I got on clearance after last Christmas and various Christmas stamps and embellishments from my stash. The box is by Karen Foster and is nice, stiff paper covered chipboard. I am hoping these last the boys for a long time.

Each drawer contains a candy or chocolate of some sort. I also slipped $1 and $2 coins in a few boxes, as well as a bill on the 19th as an extra treat for Jake on his birthday. I have always tried to keep Christmas and Jake's birthday very distinct but he suckered us into buying his b-day present early this year (skis), which is just as well as he has used them a dozen times already this season.

Thanks for visiting!

Raspberry Suite Colour Challenge # 11 & My Provincial Champ!

Not too sure about this one, it looked so much better in my head...ha ha. It turned out to be such a basic card. I will give this to my DH who is away on vacation right now (I hope he doesn't mind the pink). He gets much more vacation time than I do and is off on a motorcycle trip. He just called me from Carmel, CA where he is staying tonight. He is going to drive up the Oregon Coast and meet us out on Vancouver Island this weekend when my vacation starts. I can't wait!!

Also sharing another picture of my son. After winning the City Champs his team advanced to Provincials this past weekend where they amazed us parents by winning gold again! We now have an approximately eight week break before hockey starts up. He keeps us crazy busy but it is totally worth it.

Thanks for visiting and have a FANTASTIC week!

The Best Thing I Ever Made

This is my son Jake. He HATES getting his picture taken but I forced a photo op following his receiving an award at his school Athletic Banquet yesterday. This is the closest thing I get to a smile these days as he is a cool teenager, afterall.

Maybe when he is acting too cool for mom I need to remind him of this silly business...

Thank Goodness he doesn't read my blog!!

But I'm glad YOU do!.

Happy Friday!!
